Many of today’s patients turn to aesthetic and reconstructive surgeries to restore health, and improve appearance for increased self-esteem and confidence. While most can achieve their desired outcomes, a resulting scar can cause undue stress to the patient during and after healing. To improve this, the Brijjit Force Modulating Tissue Bridge from Brijjit Medical (Marietta, Ga.) is helping physicians relieve skin tension, support the post-operative healing process and help scars Heal Beautifully®.

Abigail Rodriguez, MD a board-certified plastic surgeon in Houston, Texas, explained that tension is the enemy to healing and scars. “With increased tension on a surgical incision, the skin edges have the tendency to separate during the healing phase. Over time, the scar may develop undesirable features such as thickening and widening. Brijjit relieves the tension along the skin edges of a fresh incision to promote faster healing, and along the edges of a healed incision to optimize the scar’s appearance.”

The Brijjit device is applied with an ergonomic fingertip applicator to enable precise positioning around the wound. A medical grade pressure sensitive adhesive allows for a secure closure with a breathable adhesion that lasts for up to four weeks. It shields the wound during movement to protect the healing process while supporting mobility.

According to Holly Casey Wall, MD, surgeon at The Wall Center for Plastic Surgery (Shreveport, La.), Brijjit creates tension dispersal. “Incisions that are under tension will create a wider scar and potentially separate. This device disperses tension far beyond the incision line with no dehiscence of the scar, resulting in a scar line that is pencil thin,” she reported. “As a surgeon, I love that it has essentially stopped any separations of breast incisions due to tension,” she reported. Dr. Wall added that Brijjit is ideal for short scars, the long, vertical incisions of breast, arm and thigh surgeries, as well as abdominoplasties.

This device can help make surgeries more efficient, stated Renee Burke, MD, owner of Renee Burke MD Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery (Barrington, Ill.). “Brijjit can help reduce the time we are in the operating room, because we can use the device in place of an extra layer of suturing,” she noted. “It was also easy to incorporate as part of a patient’s postoperative regimen.

“I use the Brijjit device on most of my body contour surgeries,” Dr. Burke continued. “I use it on breast lifts by placing the Brijjit devices from the level of the nipple all the way down to the crease of the breast. It helps the vertical scar fade and become as imperceptible as possible. Applying Brijjit right after surgery where the wound is at its weakest may also protect it from anything that might superficially contaminate the incision or that could interfere with wound healing.”

Dr. Rodriguez says that Brijjit has been easy to adopt into her practice and has improved surgical outcomes regarding scars. “With fewer wounds and scars requiring revision, Brijjit has the potential to reduce costs after surgery and reduce the need for additional clinic visits,” she explained. “It has also helped me emphasize to my patients that I am doing my best to give them beautifully imperceptible scars. It is a wonderful tool to have in our toolbox as plastic surgeons.”
