Aesthetic MVPs: Justin C. Cohen, MD, FACS: Pioneering Excellence in Medical Aesthetics

Article-Aesthetic MVPs: Justin C. Cohen, MD, FACS: Pioneering Excellence in Medical Aesthetics

In this issue we interviewed Justin C. Cohen, MD, FACS. Dr. Cohen is board certified by both the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, as well as the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

As one of the few surgeons in the country who performs a true ‘deep-plane’ facelift, Dr. Cohen is highly sought after for his natural-looking facial rejuvenation procedures. He is also recognized for his unique techniques in rhinoplasty that create balanced and lasting results.

TAG: Why did you choose to be a doctor?

I have been fascinated with anatomy and the science of our bodies from a young age. The more I learned about how complicated we all are, the more I fell in love. Realizing I could turn this into a life-long passion that allowed me to help people along the way made my career path an easy decision.

TAG: How long have you been in practice and what is your level of training?

I completed medical school in 2009 and have been focusing on head and neck surgery ever since. My training included a residency in otolaryngology – head & neck surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital, as well as a dedicated fellowship in facial plastic surgery at Princeton.

TAG: How and why did you choose your specific specialty?

The artistic nature of plastic surgery allows me to flex my creative side, which I feel is too often underappreciated in medicine. I enjoy the complex surgical challenges and appreciate the impact I can make on my patients’ quality of life.

TAG: What is your primary area of interest within aesthetic medicine?

My focus is on facial cosmetic procedures that produce the most natural results possible. I specialize in surgical facial rejuvenation, such as my deep-plane facelift technique or eyelid and lip lifts. I also perform facial enhancement procedures such as rhinoplasty.

TAG: What challenges do you think your generation, or the next generation of aesthetic surgeons and practitioners, will face?

Technology will continue to improve quickly and may provide significant advances in terms of available options for facial rejuvenation, with or without surgery. The field of regenerative medicine is another area with great promise. However, the challenge will be combing through all the different choices to find the best mix of stateof-the-art and tried-and-true.

TAG: Who is your biggest inspiration?

There are several surgeons whom I consider to be pillars of my field that I aspire to be like over time; however, I get the greatest inspiration from my kids. Their positivity motivates me to be more than just my job.

TAG: What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

My fellowship director would frequently remind me that life balance is critical to happiness. So many surgeons prioritize practice volume and revenue over all else. I strive to put as much energy into my life outside the office as I do within it.

TAG: Name a product or service you love so much that you would happily be that company’s spokesperson?

Anyone who sells chocolate. Literally anyone.

TAG: What do you think is the greatest medical invention of all time?

The answer must be antibiotics, right? Countless lives saved. Not sure what else could even compare!
