Aesthetic providers understand that their ability to retain patients relies on how safely and effectively they can address the disruptions to the skin’s barrier, as well as microbiomes seen in skin diseases and the aging process. This is why treatments using the skin’s innate repair mechanisms hold such value – they allow physicians to harness the skin’s form and function to restore optimal health.

Tapping into the skin’s ability to heal is not new for Crown Aesthetics (Dallas, Texas). SkinPen® Precision, the company’s microneedling product, company’s microneedling product, stimulates collagen and elastin production by activating the skin’s wound healing process, while their novel topical BIOJUVE™, launched in January 2023, uses living microbe technology to balance the skin’s microbiome.

In 2018, SkinPen gained attention by becoming the first FDA-cleared microneedling device. “I was drawn to SkinPen because it is very science-based and safe,” explained Deirdre Hooper, MD, a dermatologist in New Orleans, La. “The device is backed by validation studies, so I trust it is going to reach the depth I want consistently and safely.”

“They also intentionally enclosed the device, so you do not get blood spatter backwards into the mechanical motor, thereby ensuring safety,” noted Suneel Chilukuri, MD, director of cosmetic surgery at Refresh Dermatology (Houston, Texas). “I believe every healthcare provider should have this device because it can offer so much for their patients. It is useful not just for wrinkles in all skin types, but also for acne scarring, which we know can greatly affect our patients’ quality of life.”

Crown Aesthetics is once again setting industry standards for skin biome care. Ten years in the making, BIOJUVE is a skin-native probiotic topical, containing the company’s patented Xycrobe™ Technology, a living subspecies of Cutibacterium acnes called C. acnes defendens. Discovered by Thomas Hitchcock, PhD, chief science officer for Crown Laboratories, Inc., this strain, which lives on the skin’s surface and deep in hair follicles, delivers Bioessentials – proteins, polypeptides and antioxidants – that are associated with optimal skin health.

“This product allows me to essentially dilute down any bacteria that might not be as potent at producing beautiful skin and, instead, use this gold standard bacteria,” explained Dr. Hooper. “So, for providers trying to understand how BIOJUVE would fit into their practice – to me, it is a new class in the topical world.”

Crown Aesthetics recently completed a twoarm, randomized clinical study evaluating the safety of BIOJUVE use before and after SkinPen microneedling treatments in patients with acne scars. The full results will be available in late 2023, but preliminary observations show an optimal skin biome allows for optimal skin remodeling.

“I am looking forward to using BIOJUVE this way,” said Doris Day, MD, a dermatologist in New York, N.Y., who co-authored a book on skin biome care with Dr. Hitchcock. “As dermatologists, we know that how we care for the skin before and after treatment is as important as the treatment itself. With this data, I feel more confident that I can use BIOJUVE to help optimize the skin microbiome and, therefore, optimize skin remodeling for my patients.”
